County That Banned Happy Meals Now Promoting McDonald’s

Santa Clara County, Calif. made national headlines in April when its Nanny State leader, Supervisor Ken Yeager, declared a ban on toys in kids’ Happy Meals. Now, we are learning that two of the county’s VTA light-rail vehicles are emblazoned with advertising promoting McDonald’s french fries.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Yeager was fully aware of the county’s revenue generating partnership with McDonald’s when he launched his campaign to ban Happy Meals. The county’s cash-strapped VTA is guaranteed “$1.2 million this year, or 60 percent of ad revenue, whichever is more,” reports the newspaper.

“It is what it is,” Yeager told reporters when asked about the ‘coincidence’ of his personal crusade against Happy Meals and followed by the promotion of a fast food company that he vehemently abhors. “It’s a mixed message.”

Let’s talk about mixed messages, Mr. Yeager. When you were riding your high horse on your crusade against Happy Meals, you said, “[I]f you look at overall the effect that the [fast food] industry is having on kids you see that its being its very detrimental … I have many nieces and nephews and I do not take them to McDonalds.”

Yeager, who has no children of his own, seems to have no problem sending non-family members’ children to the very place that he finds so “detrimental” to their health, especially when his struggling county stands to make a quick million or more.
