Nanny State Law Steals Christmas Toys from Needy Kids

Walter Olson at Overlawyered.com shares this somber reminder that the Grinch is alive and well on Capitol Hill and likes to steal Christmas toys from needy children:

TheToymakers.org crafts free wooden toys for sick and needy children. Don't let the nanny state stand in the way of their charitable works!

A nonprofit in suburban Chicago each year encourages its woodworker members “to craft and donate wooden Christmas toys to less fortunate children.” After donating upwards of 700 toys a year in the past, it will have to discontinue the program in future since it can’t afford the third-party testing required under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, sponsored by area members of Congress Bobby Rush and Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) …”

At least one Member of Congress hailing from Illinois is committed to preserving the tradition of providing needy children with handcrafted wooden toys. Rep. Judy Biggert (R-Ill.) recently slammed the ill-conceived consumer safety law as “a perfect example of overzealous federal rule makers not listening to common sense.”

Biggert is co-sponsoring H.R. 968 with the expectation of amending the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) because she said it was not intended to “impose heavy-handed regulations” on charitable organizations that donate their hand-crafted toys to needy children.

  2. They might as well close all goodwill and thrift stores…or at least ban them from selling donated toys. I mean, who know what people donate. They might be dirty, disease ridden or unsafe. How dare people donated any kind of toys to those poor needy children! Better that they don’t have anything to play with ya know…

  3. How about a stick? Can they play with a stick, or does that have to be tested, too? After all, they might get a splinter…..

  4. New York Strippers that dance a large party the old fashioned way with talent and good looks. This may sound like a given but this is not usually the case.
