Criminals can still pack heat during a state of emergency because they've never allowed the law to stand in the way of victimizing anyone. What's wrong with this picture?
The recent blizzard that hammered North Carolina is also taking its toll on the state’s law abiding gun owners. Citizens possessing concealed carry permits who are caught packing heat during the “state of emergency” will be subject to criminal charges, per the state’s firearms law.
On Christmas Day, Lt. Governor Walter Dalton, in consultation with Governor Bev Perdue, called in the National Guard as snow covered every county in the state. Once a state of emergency is declared, concealed carry permits become null and void, and those who aren’t familiar with this bizarre stipulation in the law are subject to arrest and criminal prosecution:
It is also a misdemeanor under North Carolina law for a person to transport or possess, off his or her own premises, a dangerous weapon in an area during a declared state of emergency, or in the vicinity of a riot. N.C. Gen. Stat. § 14-288.7
Can you find any logic in North Carolina’s firearms law for stripping law abiding gun owners of their concealed carry privileges during inclement weather?
What a stupid law! One would assume that a “State of Emergency” is when a concealed carry holder is at most need of their concealed weapon. What idiot thought this was a good law? I really thought the people of North Carolina had better sense than this…….!
The logic is the Government self anointed ROYALTY (because you do not think that they or their families will be without armed security) simply want the general population to DROP DEAD!
I can’t believe what I’m reading. It is hard to comment on this stupid law without profanity! Natural disasters bring out the worst in people so to take away their right to protect themselves is #%&$ing crazy. I am a former police officer and had something like this come up I would never even think about enforcing such an unconstitutional law.
How can our politicians and law makers get to such high positions while being so stupid or ignorant or both? Do they think criminals out to loot and rape are going to have guns? Yes they will! Come on people wake up! Its almost 2011 – not 1956 Mayberry.

In other words all the government has to do is declare a state of emergency and they can essentially disarm the citizens and turn them into subjects. It is time to do something about this nonsense before the nation is declared to be under a state of emergency and we are all disarmed.
A very simple back door gun grab. Just about any excuse can be used for a state of emergency. This is New Orleans all over again. Please citizens of North Carolina get this law changed post haste. It sets a bad, bad precedent for the other states, too.
Just about time for some of that “Civil disobedience” to start surfacing.
I live in North Carolina. During all the declared times, I still carry. No government will take my rights away, that were given to me by my creator.

This law makes it illegal to own a gun in your own home during a state of emergency. Build more jails, because EVERYBODY who owns a gun and didn’t surrender them to a “law enforcement official” broke the law. This is yet another reason why disrespect for government is rising. And it should.

The key is to get rid of Gov. Bev Perdue. Every time a breath of wind hits North Carolina, she declares a state of emergency. Since when does a citizen’s constitutional rights get stripped because of inclement weather? When pols declare ‘a state of emergency”?
How did such a law get enacted in North Carolina, in the first place? I always thought the state was gun-friendly. Even more sobering, how did a sow-belly like Perdue get elected?
Putting a Second Amendment friendly governor in Raleigh should be N.C. voters’ top priority next election.
It’s simple. Everyone who is legal and has a CCW ignore the law. Openly defy it and dare them to arrest you. I don’t live in NC, but I’ll guarantee you that I would not give up my right to carry during a state of emergency. My inherent and Constitutional right to self defense/defense of my family makes a politician’s brain fart a very distant second. $%^& them and their law. Abuse of power by the government is meant to be defied and crushed.
