Elementary School Bans Sitting in Class to Combat Obesity

Children in one Texas elementary school are not allowed to sit in class because school officials are convinced traditional sit-down desks are fueling the so-called childhood obesity ‘epidemic.’ Instead, the youngsters are propped in front of adjustable height stand-up desks in an effort to burn calories throughout the day.

Edie Hedge, a first grade teacher at College Hills Elementary in College Station, Texas, told KBTX-TV’s Nicole Morten that the anti-sitting initiative has yielded positive results for herself and her students.

“I have really enjoyed them,” Hedge said. “I feel like the students have really been able to focus and pay attention to their work because they are using some of their energy in just standing.”

Every student in grades K-4, whether they’re obese or not, is a participant in an experiment that is “tracking the students’ movement to determine how many more calories are burned by those at stand-up desks than at traditional desks,” Morten notes.

“What we found is the standing classrooms were on average burning about 17% more calories during the time they were in the class than the seated desks,” says Dr. Mark Benden, a professor at Texas A&M and the lead researcher on this experiment. He admitted that students are provided with stools to make “standing more comfortable” and give their tired feet an occasional rest.

College Hills Elementary Principal Jane Rankin said she’s thrilled that her school is the first in Texas to tackle childhood obesity by forcing children to stand all day long. “It’s exciting to know that we are helping a project that could conceivably be something that would help a lot of children in a lot of different places,” she said.

The results from the experiment are still being compiled and even Principal Rankin sounds skeptical. Based on the initial discoveries we’ve noted, how would you feel if your child was not allowed to sit in the classroom all day long … in the name of preventing or combating obesity?

School Principal Bans ‘Unhealthy’ Birthday Cupcakes

Nothing says "happy birthday" like a watermelon dressed-up to look like REAL birthday cake!

Nothing says "happy birthday" like a watermelon dressed-up to look like REAL birthday cake!

The longstanding tradition of children being treated to cupcakes on their birthdays has fallen victim to the so-called obesity epidemic in one Detroit, Mich., elementary school. The school’s principal declared cupcakes ‘unhealthy’ and unworthy of taking-up time in the classroom for children to honor their classmates’ birthdays.

Syndee Malek, principal at Vandenberg Elementary School, boasts that she’s already removed fried foods from the cafeteria, banned “junk foods” from bake sales, and swapped pizza parties with dodgeball games (isn’t that a ‘violent’ sport that’s been banned by the nanny state?). She also claims kids can’t get enough of the cafeteria’s fruit and veggie bar.

Now, Malek is targeting cupcakes that were previously served only on special occasions — not every day of the school year. She says that the ban isn’t as extreme as it sounds because it only applies to cupcake distribution in the classroom. “If parents want to bring them to school and serve them themselves during the children’s lunch hour, that’s fine,” she added.

Note that Malek requires parents to be present and serve the cupcakes to students if they want to continue this birthday tradition for their children. That means Little Johnny can’t bring a box of cupcakes on the bus and share them with his classmates unless a parent joins him in the cafeteria at lunchtime. Tough luck for kids whose parents can’t break free from work or other responsibilities. You can bet that’s all part of Malek’s plan, too.

The rationale behind Malek anti-cupcake initiative is simple: She claims to be protecting ‘her children’ from bad food choices that have the potential to adversely affect their health.

“I think we’ve all gone through life changes and seen how the choices you’ve made in your life have affected you physically,” Malek said. “You just want a better life for your kids. And these are my kids.”

Actually, they’re not your kids, Principal Malek! You are responsible for ensuring other people’s children are educated and kept safe while under your supervision and that of your faculty, but that’s where your personal responsibility ends. Further, trying to prevent possible outcomes such as children becoming obese from eating a few cupcakes in the classroom every year is asinine. Go screw-up your own kids’ childhoods and birthdays! You won’t see us raising a fuss.

If you share our sentiments, or would like to applaud Principal Malek, here’s her contact information:

White House Anti-Obsesity Campaign Promotes Anti-Capitalist Agenda to Kids

First Nanny Michelle Obama wanted to create an “infographic” to illustrate how the so-called obesity ‘epidemic’ is striking-down American children, so she sponsored a contest in June through her “Let’s Move” crusade. The results are in, and one lucky youngster took the grand prize by citing information created by individuals and organizations that are more concerned about defeating capitalism than curbing obesity.

First, let’s take a look at the requirements for contestants in the anti-obesity propaganda creation contest:

The idea is to create an infographic that shows the current state of children’s health, and that illustrates some avenue to combat the epidemic, including: getting children a healthy start on life; empowering parents and caregivers; providing healthy food in schools; improving access to healthy, affordable food; and getting children more physically active.

Now, take a few moments to examine the submission that won Jenn Cash “Best Overall Infographic” design:

According to Good.is, the website partnering with the “Let’s Move” campaign in sponsoring the contest, “Cash’s time line showing the rise of childhood obesity compared to the growing amount of food we eat and TV we watch is a sobering reminder of what we need to do to make our children healthier. It’s incredibly well-sourced and well-illustrated and takes home our top prize.”

The Nanny State Liberation Front was curious to explore the links to sources displayed below Cash’s artwork to see just how “incredibly well-sourced” she is, and, if anything, we learned that she’s an incredibly creative young lady.

Cash cites 20 informational sources for the data depicted on her graph, including, of course, the “Let’s Move” website, as well as university studies and federal health reports. At least that information can be passed-off to the masses as coming from reputable sources with an ounce of credibility.

However, Cash also includes much less reputable and highly questionable sources that, upon closer inspection, reveal agendas that are remotely linked to curbing obesity and more aligned with promoting lifestyle behavior modification, as well as the anti-capitalist and anti-corporate agendas of individuals and organizations (something that Cash probably didn’t bother investigating or intentionally disregarded):

KillerCoke.org – A front group for union labor organizations and ‘progressive’ domestic and international organizations with anti-capitalist and anti-corporate agendas.

Wikipedia.org – That bastion of ‘truth’ and ‘knowledge’ where everything is factual until someone tries to disprove or discredit it — if allowed by the administrators who, of course, are unbiased and non-partisan. Cash relies heavily on the ‘truth tellers’ writing freely here for her artistic inspiration.

Michael Pollan – A darling of the State-Run Media and anti-obesity crusade, Pollan is a food writer and journalism professor at the University of California at Berkeley. He begins his book, In Defense of Food, by instructing readers, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Pollan’s critics warn unassuming readers of his agenda-driven rants, “He typically counsels readers to make their food decisions based on politics—not on what their bodies need.”

Becky Robbins – A self-described mother of two young children who likes to write in her free time. She is also “a customer service and sales representative,” but feels qualified to lecture readers about what she defines as healthy eating in her home and your own.

James Rada, Jr. – He likes to write “historical novels” that have nothing to do with health or obesity-related issues, but he did submit an article to eHow.com about the evils of high fructose corn syrup produced by ‘Big Corn’ and peddled by corporate food processors, so that must make him a nutrition expert, food scientist and economist.

Tracy Fernandez Rysavy – She’s a crunchy granola-eating, tree-hugging eco-activist and editor of Co-op America, “a national nonprofit helping people use their economic power for a more socially just and environmentally sustainable society.” She also has a vendetta against the Coca-Cola Company, calling its capitalist global operation a “sinister” cancer-causing menace to society.

Eric Schlosser – Author of the bestseller Fast Food Nation, he “was smart enough to know that a study of the intricacies of the ‘fast food’ industry would not appeal to most book-buyers. So instead of presenting an objective investigation of this major industry, or giving a fair shake to companies like McDonald’s (which offers one in 15 Americans entrée into the workforce), Schlosser used ‘fast food’ as the basis for a rhetorical assault on capitalism.” (Source: ConsumerFreedom.com)

Guadalupe Ayala, PhD – If you want to find cancer-causing agents in food sources, she’s your goto girl. She’s also working with the Cancer Center at the University of California at San Diego to “promote home and environmental change to prevent childhood obesity.” Knock-knock! Guadalupe doesn’t think your home is fit to raise your child.

30 Project – Another anti-capitalist, anti-corporate organization that has an axe to grind with the food and beverage industry, but this one wants to put us in a time machine and return to a magical time when people foraged for nuts and berries in the forest as opposed to shopping in grocery stores for “cheap processed foods.”

Cash’s research for her award-winning anti-obesity propaganda poster impressed likeminded judges, but the greatest impression could be that made on school children across America who will undoubtedly find her artwork hanging in their classrooms, cafeterias and gymnasiums.

Do you support government-sponsored propaganda being promoted among children with the ultimate goal of adjusting their lifestyles and behaviors to fit the molds that nanny state bureaucrats and special interest groups promote as serving their best interests?

Join the Nanny State Liberation Front and its 20,000 supporters on Facebook if you’re ready to put an end to big government interference in American citizens’ lives from the cradle to the grave.

NAACP Wants to Be Held “Accountable” for Preventing Obesity Among Blacks

The NAACP will accept the blame if the "next generation" of black Americans are overweight.

The NAACP will accept the blame if the next generation of black Americans are overweight.

First Lady Michelle Obama and her fellow anti-obesity crusaders no longer have to worry about the waistlines of black children. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) says obesity is a “social justice” issue that the civil rights organization is best equipped to handle among its own people.

NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous was quoted today in a joint press release stating that fighting childhood obesity requires taking personal “responsibility” and his organization is ready to be held “accountable” for making sure black children no longer fall victim to it:

“This epidemic is a social justice issue and is affecting African-American communities and communities of color at a disparate rate. We have to ask ourselves, who will take the responsibility to support public policies that will make our communities healthier? Who should be held accountable for the health of our children?  The NAACP is ready to take the responsibility to fight for the health of the next generation.”

As you can see, Jealous’ definition of ‘personal responsibility’ means he wants to have a hand in determining how big government further controls black peoples’ lives. In essence, Johnson wants to foster black parents’ dependency on government programs that do anything but encourage personal responsibility within themselves and their children.

Despite his strong rhetoric, Jealous didn’t note a deadline for determining the success of his efforts to cure the obesity ‘epidemic’ plaguing black children, making it difficult for anyone to hold him accountable for his success or failure. Perhaps, that’s because as long as obesity continues to plague blacks, the NAACP will receive federal, state and private grants to fund their ongoing anti-obesity ‘efforts.’

US Medical Journal Reports Obesity ‘Crisis’ Is Fattening Big Government

Sin taxes: The choice of a new generation of fascist dictators.

Sin taxes: The choice of a new generation of fascist dictators.

A new report appearing in an American medical journal says the federal government is exploiting the nation’s so-called obesity ‘crisis’ to “extract more money from taxpayers and to expand government.” Additionally, the article’s authors note that nanny state bureaucrats have already failed in their attempts to meet self-imposed goals for reducing obesity, perhaps, because they are targeting food sources that pose no proven risk to Americans’ waistlines.

Michael L. Marlow, Ph.D. and Alden F. Shiers, Ph.D., both economists at California Polytechnic State University, write in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons that the federal government has erred in its decision to use “sin taxes” as its weapon of choice to win the war on obesity. The primary target of these sin taxes is sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), despite empirical studies that do not show a clear, if at all existent, link between SSBs and obesity, the authors state:

It is sheer folly to single out a specific food or beverage as the “cause of obesity” when common sense indicates that obesity is a product of genetics, hormones, food choice, exercise or lack thereof, and the basic equation: Calories consumed minus calories expended = weight gain or weight loss. If one eliminates soda pop from his diet, while consuming 10,000 calories per day and expending 1,000 calories per day in exercise, that individual will gain weight. Moreover, if government interventions somehow reduce soda consumption, it is likely that substitution will take place, such as eating more food or simply adding more sugar to home-brewed iced tea. Effects on weight are thus ambiguous at best.

Powering forward despite any solid or convincing empirical data to support their crusade against SSBs, many states are jumping on-board the “sin tax” bandwagon with the expectation that they can alter Americans’ eating and drinking habits by pricing soft drinks and junk food out of reach of cost-conscious consumers, namely low-income minorities that are the primary targets of nanny state anti-obesity initiatives. Those who can afford to pay more for so-called ‘unhealthy’ food and beverages, essentially, will be counted on to generate tax revenues that create and fund big government “public health” programs charged with telling citizens how and what to eat.

Marlow and Shiers oppose efforts by government officials to demonize sugar-sweetened beverages because empirical studies consistently fail to establish a relationship between SSBs and obesity. Any relationship that has been established between SSBs and obesity, they note, indicates a “correlation rather than a causation.” Despite this non-existent ’cause and effect’ relationship, the First Lady, Surgeon General and federal officials continue to demonize SSBs as the primary factor responsible for fueling the so-called obesity ‘epidemic.’

Keep in mind, when President George W. Bush said he knew that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was stockpiling weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and used that premise as a launching point to liberate Iraq, he landed himself in a heap of trouble for making policy decisions based on what critics decried was an erroneous assumption and extreme error in judgment. Lucky for the First Lady and her fellow big government anti-obesity crusaders, the harshest critics of President Bush are their biggest fans and supporters, so they should have no problem pulling our nation in to another costly battle against a ‘self-created’ enemy threat.

Data proving the effectiveness of SSB sin taxes on trimming Americans’ waistlines is “very scarce,” the authors note, just like evidence of WMDs in Iraq. One recent study, they note, “found that tax hikes on soda lowered adult BMI, but the magnitude of the effect was trivial. A one-percentage-point increase in the tax rate led to a decrease of only 0.003 BMI points. A childhood longitudinal study of young schoolchildren found no relationship between soda taxes and weight gain.”

“The idea of funneling ‘sin tax’ revenues into government programs to discourage unhealthy behavior has been tried with tobacco taxes,” reminisce the authors. “Roughly 10 percent of tobacco tax revenue flows into smoking-control programs—which are not very effective—and the rest is used for unrelated government programs.”

Nanny state bureaucrats are pitching their war on obesity as a mission of compassion to save American citizens from a threat they are being led to believe has rendered them helpless to combat without the helping hand of big government. Doctors and citizens alike “should be skeptical” of another round of big government intervention efforts as two recent federal initiatives to trim Americans’ waistlines failed to achieve their goals.

In November of 2000, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services “established ‘Healthy People’ goals of 15% or less for adult obesity and 5% for children and adolescents by 2010,” cite Marlow and Shiers. “Neither goal has been met.”

A decade later, Americans faced with high unemployment and a lousy economy are being conned in to believing that paying more taxes on sinful indulgences like Coca-Cola and Gatorade will prove to be the nail in the coffin for the obesity ‘epidemic’ that plagues them. Marlow and Shiers find that scenario hard for Americans to swallow, and even more difficult for the federal government to pull-off.

“We predict government intervention will make obesity worse as it crowds out market-based solutions that effectively tie weight loss to personal responsibility, higher wages, and lower insurance premiums,” conclude Marlow and Shiers. “The main effect of the campaign will be to extract more money from taxpayers and to expand government.”

MSNBC’s Scarborough Speaks with Forked Tongue

Click to watch so-called Libertarian Joe Scarborough put his foot in his mouth.

Joe Scarborough claims he’s a conservative with a Libertarian bent, but Newsbusters.org caught the “Morning Joe” host citing the virtues of big government telling citizens what they should eat and drink:

On today’s Morning Joe, Scarborough declared that he favors forcing all restaurants to put calorie counts on their menus. Joe was responding to Mika’s report that, under the umbrella of ObamaCare, many restaurants will be required to disclose calories.

Joe was responding to Mika’s report that, under the umbrella of ObamaCare, many restaurants will be required to diclose calories. Watch as Joe admits that, at least when it comes to food, his supposed libertarian streak was a sham.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: The days of American consumers being in the dark about how many calories they’re consuming may be coming to an end.  In accordance with the recently enacted health-care overhaul, the federal government is requiring movie theaters, airplanes, trains, even grocery-store food courts to post calorie counts.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: OK, you know what? I’ve got to drop this act that I do. Because I know I’m fat, and Mika tells me I’m fat, this act about how I think you’re a bore, and I’ve got to tell.  We went up to Friendly’s, and I’m just going to out them, and I guess I should salute them.  We were in Connecticut, and somebody said, hey, let’s go to Friendly’s, and I said OK, never been.  They put the calories on the menu.  And I would have, without looking, consumed about 2,500 to 3,000 calories.  After looking at the counts on those things, I was just grossed out.  I had soup. This is critical.  It really is. I hate to sound like you.  This is a critical, critical step.  I think all restaurants should be required to put calorie counts next to it. Again, not sounding like you. But I’ve played that act long enough.

A true libertarian would observe that information is a commodity. If there’s a demand for calorie counts, if people are more willing to patronize restaurants that provide that information, then restaurants will rush to offer it.  It’s the same principle that accounts for tofu burgers on the Upper West Side and BBQ joints in Texas. We don’t need government to force calorie counts down our throats, excuse the pun.

Angry Kids Blame Parents for Their Obesity

A global fitness club chain is about to tell the world that the childhood obesity ‘epidemic’ does not exist. “There is no childhood obesity epidemic,” state ads that will soon fill the airwaves and magazines in an attempt to target lazy parents who are the true causes of their children’s weight struggles.

“Too much blame is being placed on the kids,” says Chuck Runyon, Anytime Fitness CEO. “Adults need to step up and be better role models if we want our kids to be healthy. That’s what this is all about.”

Anytime Fitness created an organization that will be featured in its ads called  the “Coalition of Angry Kids” or “COAK.” A press release says the fat kids are “angry” because parents and adults aren’t doing enough to help them lead healthy lifestyles.

“Somebody needs the courage to stand up and say, ‘The primary reason we have so many overweight kids is because they have poor role models: overweight adults,’” Runyon said.

Anytime Fitness will offer free trial memberships to adults during our nation’s first “National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month” in September. Obviously, it’s great publicity for Anytime Fitness’ growing business, but more importantly, it’s a potentially rewarding opportunity for parents and children alike to improve their lives and health together with a little inspiration from a results-oriented organization.

Runyon predicts politicians and the media will be using National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month to tell kids to stop playing video games and go play outside, as well as suggesting nanny state initiatives that “declare war on school lunches, fast food and vending machines.”

“But nobody will be offering any real solutions,” Runyon says. That’s why he’s stepping-up to the plate and the NSLF will be interested to learn more about his efforts and successes.

To find the nearest participating Anytime Fitness club and get your free trial membership this month, visit www.anytimefitness.com.

The official COAK.org website will launch September 1st.

States’ Social Experiment Baits Low-Income Kids with Free Food

Nanny state bureaucrats are dangling carrots to lure hungry low-income women, children and refugees in to their social experiment.

Nanny state bureaucrats are dangling carrots to lure hungry low-income women, children and refugees in to their social experiment.

Thanks to nanny state bureaucrats in upper New England, low-income children are receiving a healthy dose of free fruit and vegetables, courtesy of taxpayers. The food giveaway isn’t exactly without cost as kids who accept produce vouchers from their doctors will automatically be enrolled in a program that monitors the effects of fruits and vegetables on their health.

The program is the brainchild of Connecticut-based Wholesome Wave, a non-profit organization dedicated to “nourishing neighborhoods across America.” Health care providers in Massachusetts and Maine will offer young at-risk patients vouchers worth $1 per day to boost their consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables harvested by local farmers in an effort to find the cure for the so-called obesity ‘epidemic.’

Participants in the program will receive ongoing monitoring by their physicians to measure “how the fresh produce affects blood pressure, weight and body mass index; blood-sugar levels; and participants’ weight,” while also collecting data on patients’ “physical activity.”

Funding for the initiative in Massachusettes will be provided by Wholesome Wave and matched by the state Department of Agricultural Resources and Wellesley-based the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, The Associated Press reports, though no indications were made with regards to the State of Maine’s use of taxpayer money to fund this social experiment.

Membership in this program is “based on the level of obesity in the family, financial limitations that serve as a barrier to buying fresh produce, and compliance with obesity treatment protocol,” organizers told the AP. More than 100 families across Massachusetts and Maine will be targeted as test subjects within the initial year of the program.

Low income kids are not the only targets of doctors and bureaucrats eager to study the effects of fruits and vegetables on their diets. Pregnant women and foreign refugees will be studied, as well.

“What makes this program unique is the administration of prescription in the form of a fruit-and-vegetable prescription by a doctor,” Wholesome Wave Chief Operating Officer Juliette Taylor-DeVries said. “And it has tremendous positive effects on the communities because it invigorates the local economy and it provides a new revenue stream for local farmers — and access and affordability to people who do not have access to fresh healthy food.”

It’s a win-win situation for everyone, if you take out of consideration the fact that doctors and bureaucrats are using free food to lure low-income women, children and refugees in to a social experiment that they would likely shun without an incentive that means the difference between going hungry or having a steady flow of government-subsidized produce to fill their bellies.

The big question remains, what happens when the experiment runs its course and there is no more free produce for the test subjects? As with all lofty and idealistic nanny state initiatives, there’s always something big government bureaucrats fail to consider, and its the people they’ve charged themselves with ‘saving’ that ultimately get screwed in the end.

What are your thoughts on doctors and government officials baiting low income women, children and refugees with free produce to become human guinea pigs?
